Peppers Silo Hotel

Peppers Silo Hotel occupies a prominent position on Kings Wharf in Launceston, transforming a series of 1960s grain silos and an adjoining wool store into a contemporary hotel overlooking the Tamar River. The project re‑imagines the site’s industrial infrastructure as a significant public destination, embedding new use within an existing urban landmark.

The design works directly with the silo structures, with 52 hotel rooms located within the concrete barrels themselves. From levels two to eight, the silos are carefully divided to provide either river or city views, while the upper level accommodates premium suites that occupy the full circular form. A new tower to the north houses additional accommodation, with old and new elements unified through restraint in geometry, material and colour.

At ground level, Grain of the Silos restaurant opens the base of the building to the waterfront, anchoring the hotel as an active public place. Rather than obscuring the site’s history, the project retains the original concrete walls of the silos, preserving their scale and texture. Recycled timber from the former wool store is incorporated throughout the interiors, paired with soft furnishings in natural tones. Reflecting ARTAS’ considered approach to large‑scale adaptive reuse, the hotel balances robustness and refinement, creating an enduring destination closely connected to its setting.
