Ulverstone Cultural Precinct
ARTAS was engaged by the Central Coast Council to design the Ulverstone Cultural Precinct, now named ‘The Hive.’
Located on a challenging site flanked by the Western Railway line and next to the Cenotaph Clocktower, the centre was envisaged as a ‘community heart.’ The building is set back on the site, creating a north facing civic space that connects to the centre of Ulverstone.
The Hive incorporates a range of community and tourist facilities over 3 levels including; visitor services, a science centre, local art gallery and museum, arts studios, woodcraft workshop, café and Tasmania’s largest planetarium.
The design utilises a restrained materials palette inside and outside, combining tones of grey and black with warm timber highlights to provide a visually interesting but neutral backdrop to the centres various activities.
