Mersey Community Hospital Theatres and Outpatient Department
The Mersey Community Hospital plays a vital role in delivering healthcare for communities across Tasmania’s North West. The upgrade to the hospital’s Theatres and Outpatients Department represents the most significant expansion of the facility since its original construction in 1960, supporting the delivery of an increased range of services in response to growing community need.
The project introduces a new three‑storey infill building between two existing hospital wings, enabling the establishment of an Elective Day Surgery Centre alongside expanded outpatient services. This work significantly improves capacity and efficiency, contributing to reduced waiting times and improved access to surgical and specialist care for the region.
ARTAS approached the project with a focus on clarity, coordination and continuity of care, delivering the works within a fully operational hospital environment. Construction was carefully staged to allow facilities to open progressively, with priority given to patient‑facing areas. The internal planning balances efficient clinical workflows with a calm and welcoming atmosphere, supporting positive patient experiences. Particular attention has been given to paediatric spaces, where colour and nature‑based imagery create reassuring environments, with these qualities extending throughout the department to reinforce a sense of care, dignity and trust within a highly technical clinical setting.
