Mersey Community Hospital Theatres and Outpatient Department
“The Mersey Community Hospital plays an essential role in delivering healthcare for communities in the North West and these upgrades will allow the hospital to deliver an increased range of services to meet community need” Jeremy Rockliffe, 2025
Fully opened in May 2025, The Mersey Community Hospital Theatres and Outpatients Department is the largest refurbishment and expansion of the existing facility since the hospital’s inception in 1960. Incorporating the construction of a new 3 storey infill building between two existing wings of the MCH, the upgrade represents a significant improvement to healthcare in the region with the provision of a new Elective Day Surgery Centre, significantly reducing waiting times and surgical endoscopy services for North-West residents.
The upgrade includes 13 new consulting rooms, 6 specialist treatment rooms, 5 dedicated paediatric rooms, audiology services, a waiting area and a physiotherapy gym. Construction and opening of the project was staged, allowing for individual facilities to open to the public as they were complete, with priority given to patient areas.
Designed to maximise the efficiency of operational flows while supporting positive patient experiences, the project balances clinical spatial requirements with welcoming colours and finishes. The paediatric spaces, in particular, incorporate bold colours and nature imagery to create an inviting a comfortable space with touches of this approach weaving through the whole project.
