Launceston Seaport Precinct
Fully opened in 2004, ARTAS designed the conversion of an old shipyard and dry-dock into one of Launceston’s most loved water-front public spaces.
The transformation provided both public and private facilities including; a pedestrian boardwalk, marina cafes, alfresco dining, 23 apartments, 7 private residences and the 4 storey Peppers Seaport Hotel. The hotel was designed to sit over the existing boat shaped dry-dock, which now forms the basement in a unique feat of engineering. Previously a section of reclaimed waterfront land, the public boardwalk turned an eyesore into a community asset, increasing pedestrian connectivity and creating an activated and inviting public space in the City’s heart.
Each of the apartments and private residents are provided with absolute waterfront views, while the 60 deluxe hotel rooms and suites overlook the marina, City and the mountains beyond. Over 20 years later, the Launceston Seaport Precinct remains a well-used and vibrant public space.
