C.H. Smith Precinct
The C.H. Smith precinct occupies a historically significant site along Lower Charles Street and Canal Street, with origins dating back to the 1830s and named after local merchant Charles Henry Smith. Shaped by Launceston’s early connection to the Tamar River, the site reflects layers of habitation, commerce, maritime trade and industry that have defined this part of the city over time.
The redevelopment re‑establishes the precinct as an active and productive part of the Central Business District, transforming a collection of early nineteenth‑century buildings into contemporary office accommodation while retaining their historic character and relationship to the public realm. New development extends beyond the retained structures to provide additional office space and public parking, directly supporting business activity, access and long‑term vitality within the city centre.
ARTAS acted as both architect and delivery partner for the project, working closely with heritage architects Plico to guide its revitalisation through careful stewardship of the site’s heritage value and a clear focus on civic outcome. Existing buildings have been restored and adapted with restraint and precision, while new work is calibrated to complement their scale and materiality. Designed to achieve a 5‑Star Green Star rating, the precinct contributes to Launceston’s evolving urban fabric, offering durable, distinctive workplaces grounded in the city’s history and future.
