Launceston General Hospital Emergency Department Expansion

The expansion of the Launceston General Hospital Emergency Department is a significant investment in emergency care for Northern Tasmania. Valued at $53.5 million, it represents the most substantial renewal of the department since its original construction in 1981, responding to increasing demand across the region.

Designed by ARTAS in collaboration with Billard Leece Partnership, the project will nearly double the size of the department, delivering a new main entry alongside upgraded reception, triage, administration and waiting areas. These works improve comfort and accessibility while supporting clearer movement, faster triage and a more efficient experience for patients, staff and visitors.

Informed by engagement with clinical staff, service teams and consumer representatives, the expansion strengthens the hospital’s capacity to provide timely, high-quality care. It forms part of a broader program of investment in the LGH precinct to support the community now and into the future.
