Northern Support School

The Northern Support School (NSS) is the only government Support School in Northern Tasmania. With an enrollment of over 100 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, the school supports students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities who may also have physical disabilities and/or moderate to severe autism.

ARTAS were engaged to undertake a major redevelopment of the original 1950’s St George’s school site, including the amalgamation of the two existing campuses. The project involved over 8 months of masterplanning, including significant consultation with the staff, school community and disability specialists.

The works included substantial remodeling of learning and learning support areas to accommodate children with significant physical, visual or mental impairments. The existing gym was extended, enabling multiple PE classes as well as whole school assemblies and productions.

A series of new play areas were introduced, providing dedicated junior, passive, senior and active spaces, allowing for both student protection and inclusion at play times regardless of ability. Additional works included reconfiguration of vehicular circulation, improvement of staff and administration facilities and the construction of a new pool.
